This is definitely a serious problem.

I know a few AOE3 players who quit playing AOE3 because of this problem.

I normally get 70% of the times “Failed to Join” error with all ports open and no fire walls (and after going through everything in the FAQ).

Even when I disconnect my router and connect directly with my modem I still get many “Failed to Join” errors.

IMO, this should be a top priority for Ensemble.

Everybody Online are complaining about this problem.

Surely there is something Ensemble can do about that.

Alright well atleast I see that others are getting this same problem.  As I said before, I knew I had this problem before, not it wasn't this bad.  Yes, hopefully they'll do something about this problem.

     Thanks,

    -Mav.

Subject: Re: "Failed to Join Game"

    Q. I am encountering general connectivity issues; such as the error messages "Invalid IP Address", "Host Canceled/rejected" or "failed to join game"; what can I do?
If you encounter any of the above error messages then most likely there is a conflict with age3 and a router setting.

    • Power Cycle your network hardware: Turn off your modem, router, and computer.
Wait a few minutes then turn them back on one at a time in the listed order.
Some routers need to be power cycled to except new versions of software such as Age of Empires 3
    • If you connect wirelessly, connect with a wired connection.
    • Verify your Firewall or internet security software is allowing Age3 (age3.exe) and TWC (age3x.exe) to pass through
    • Disable your Firewall or internet security software temporarily while you test connecting to the game.
    • Upgrade your firmware on your router and your network card
    • Toggle UPnP (If you have UPnP on, try turning it off and if you have UPnP off, try turning it on.
    • Test with the DMZ setting both on and off
    • Port forward UDP and TCP/IP ports 2300-2310 to your machine. If that range does not work try expanding it to cover ports 2300-2340, or try using the OverridePort command listed below.
    • Some routers have a Gaming Mode. Be sure to enable that option if your router supports this feature.
    • If your router has logging turned on make sure to clean off your logs or restart logging before playing Age of Empires 3
    • Change your computers IP on your router. Example: if your computer sits at 192.168.0.100 change it to 192.168.0.200

Note, if you need assistance configuring your router please refer to your router manufacture.

I have wireless internet yet i have no control over it. I get it form an inn down the street which gives it out for free. I paid $100 for my adapter and the internet is fast 24mbps to 36mbps. There for i cannot make any changes and i have the same problem. It takes on average 10 games just to connect much less to find a game i want, 5 to 10 min search. Yet should there not be a better way to connect. Why are there different IP adresses. I know i am stupid when i come to this so plz help.

    ES_Lethe,

Thank you for listing the different possible solutions.

I have a question for you:

How is it possible that I still get “Failed to Join” often even after I turn off my Vista firewall (I have no Security software) and even when I am connected with my Modem directly via wire (bypassing my router)?

What else could cause the problem?

What else could be done to solve it?

When AOE3 was released “Failed to Join” didn’t exist.

This error started when Ensemble introduced a new check to prevent OOS errors.

However, OOS errors were NOT as common as “Failed to Join” error is common now.

So perhaps there is a way to scale back the strict validation that produces the “Failed to Join” error?

Again, this is a very serious issue that affects everybody and everybody complains about it.

Most players cannot deal with it even when they see this long list of possible solutions.

If this problem is not solved it will then restrict our future online experience (it’s already doing that) and the number of players who are playing online.

This issue will also continue to cause problems in future Age games.

Please let the upper management (at Ensemble) know that this is a serious problem that affects the entire online community (if they don’t know that already).

    Thank you,

Thanks for posting some possibilities, I've tried nearly all of that but still no luck.  It's fine I guess, but yes, I do wish Ensemble would do something about this.  Oh well, nothing ya can do about it :)

     Thanks,

     -Mav.

It's not Vista.... the problem of not connecting is either..... IP problems, long distance between you and your opponent (like half-way around the world), different version of the game than your opponent... etc...
