one thing is clear, ppl who played this game only to get xp/cards will not play it anymore.

i only played bf2142 untill i had all the unlocks, after that i didnt play it anymore.

    time will show...

I was thinking of the exact same thing, the feeling that 'you've seen all there is to be seen' in such a short time is probably going to hurt the depth that defines AoE3 gameplay.

Well, strangely enough, this problem doesn't really seem to hurt other successful RTS.  Heck, command and conquer is essentially the same game it was 12 years ago with better graphics, and people still play that for some reason.

If there's something that detracts from the depth of the game, in my opinion it is the relatively sparse number of players.  The lack of a completely mod friendly structure also doesn't help.  I suspect that on Battlenet, as many or more user made scenarios are played as "real" games on official maps.

I think though that ES doesn't make money on subscriptions.  It isn't really in their interest to have a small community that plays forever when perhaps they could have a much larger community that means more sales, and creates more buzz for the next game they do.

ALSO, there IS a lot of depth to the game, but much of it goes unexplored because so much time is invested in the act of unlocking that there is less opportunity to actually explore the various civs.  When there were only 8 civs and they all had a very similar structure, maybe this wasn't as big a deal, but now you have 14 and the TWC and TAD civs all play very differently than the european civs.  What's the point of some one buying all 3 games when realistically they can't even touch all the content in all 3 until long after the next thing has come along?

Very true, Es think about the people who work hard for their home city xp levels watta waste, its gonna draw alot of members away from aoe, Its like poker And the home city levels are your chips if you have alot of them there is no excitement but if ur hanging in there by a few chips its exciting and ur giving everyone free chips please sleep on it

    THIS SUCKS

Totally pointless you may as well just give everyone every card to choose from and lose civ lvls all together. This for me takes away a huge part of the game play. Half the fun is in learning new civs and when you learning you start from the BOTTOM and work your way up.

Also un balances the game because you have taken away the option of a higher ranked player playing a lower ranked player  and using a low lvl civ to offset the the skill differance.

And I totally agree with the points above  you will never know how good your partner/s are going to be

    HappyGoLucky:

Oh my god you just compare a RTS vs. human players to a RPG game against the computer.Everyone should be on equal ground in a RTS game like AOE III.Because of Home City level so many people are not. That is what I am trying to say and yet you compare what I am saying to something that is totally different like that my god.I am done with you after this post because I refuse to argue with someone who is this stupid.

Yes and I stated it before for their to be a game option.

I wasn't comparing it to an RPG game against the computer, the fact of the matter is the way it was designed was intended to have these cards be unlocked later on after playing the civ, if you dont do that, then you lose out, but if you do, you are better at the civ.

:( I'm not very happy about this... Can you at least choose if you want to start your HC at 1 or not?
