mortars outrange forts but it is very hard to get the mortars to aim properly and if you miss while right clicking you could walk the mortars over to the forts therefore it is best to use petards instead

*Cue Metis with the range differences*

    OK, why not.

The unupgraded European mortar has a minimum range of four and a maximum range of 40. What some people don't realize is that it also has a tiny splash area, not much but it is sufficient to kill units that are standing too close to a wall or building. The unupgraded fort has a range of 26, the upgraded fort has a range of 32. Therefore, a mortar can stand off and attack a fort out of the range of its cannon.

Conversely, a falconet has exactly the same range as an unupgraded fort so will be fired upon if it is close enough to fire on the fort. You can't get mortars until age IV, so if you want to attack a fort in Age III you will be fired upon.

Culverins have a range of 34 and so can out-range even an upgraded fort. However, they also have a slow rate of fire, low damage, and no bonus versus buildings. Shoot a culverin at a fort and it will probably ignore you for a couple of minutes then train a hussar to come and kill you.

handmortars have 34 range and unupgraded motarus have 40 range so yes they both out range a fort

Dont heavy cannons work as well?

also, although the fort does not have a minimum range, if the unit is close enough to it, wont the fort's attack become much weaker with an attack of like 2?

Ive seen this when playing another player, who just happened to drop off a hussar right where my fort was when i shot down his boat.

The hussar stayed there for minutes at a time and I eventually had to train some units to get rid of it.

Given this, the fort is also distracted, you can throw a couple falconets at the fort, without getting shot at

I vote we get together and ban every person thats name starts with max2h
