Here's my usual DM strategy for the Russians:

1. 1 settler makes a house, 1 settler makes a church, 3 settlers make a blockhouse (make 3 or more blockhouses).  Also the explorer should make a T center

2. After church is built, get mercentalism and get 5 shipments in the following order:

Fencing School

Dueling School

Blockhouse hitpoints

Blockhouse cannon

Riding School

3. Build 2-3 artillery foundries and make culverins and falconets

4. Spam musks.

5. Make stables and make 20-30 cossacks

6. Make 40 or more settlers and task them on mills and plantations

7. Get 4 blockhouse card and build blockhouses around your colony

8. Divide your forces and send them to different parts of your colony

9. Wait for your opponents to attack.

10. After a few of your opponent's mass attacks, counterattack him and win!

I do make units as soon as I have a blockhouse.

How do u lose with this? Fast attacks?

Either he wears down my military or slips through my defense and ruins my eco.

You want to be the one to attack. Remember that your units are weaker than your opponents. As the game wears on their upgrades will make their units far superior to yours. Also, try to diversify in terms of the units you use. If your opponent is making skirms, cavalry, and cannons you need to make/use the appropiate counters.

Defensive structures are almost useless against upgraded units.

Actually, the upgrades that russian infantry recieve affect the original stats of the units, not the russian weak stats. The problem is, that the units are still weaker, and because of their range and pop/cost (strongness), they still lose to other units. Oh, and remember that someone who defends recieves also a slight adventage. For example, you still got the opportunity to raid the opponent's base, you can build more buildings at start...

1. Don't use 4 blockhouse card. This is a complete waste when you have a lot of resources. Use permanent benefit cards.

2. YOU FORGOT TO MENTION THE STANDING ARMY TEHNOLOGY: INSTANT INFANTRY.

3. You must be the one to attack. If you use instant infantry, you can "outspam" the opponent even if you don't fight cost effectively.

4. If you are defending, don't build musketeers before you see enemy army: maybe strelets or halberdiers would be better: you can build them instanty, so you can wait to the last moment.

5. In addition to the main army, you should always have a separate small army of oprichnics annoying the enemy economy.

Since you have instant infantry, send some units up and see what your opponent is making. Spam units based on what your enemy makes. Also, you need All 99 vils if you want a stable economy, otherwise, since your units are weaker, your economy gets drained a little faster than your opponents. ES made Opricks have such OP seige. Use it to your advantage ALWAYS! Saves you a ton over mortars....

Little armies are an epic failure in DM, you need to make a giant army and constantly push opponent. If possible, raid him with natives from behind.

Yea I agree with Crazy Guy. The second you split your army up, Your opponent has the advantage on your main army, which means GG in most cases.
