what i dont get is that with otto strat guides you guys play otto every time and every time you do exactly the same, HOW in gods name can you still be that low ranked?

anyways, otto's is the easiest civ to play which is why many noobs use them. what you should try is to play another civ and learn this game for real, the otto's are just totally different from the rest so you'll never become a good player just playing otto's. if you've tried germans, spanish, ports and russians and their respective BO's, and reached a good knowledge about them, i'm sure that when you first play any other civ you'll find it easy(er).

you will have had it all: (water) booming, rushing, FF'ing, fight for map control, micro, TP control, name me any game feature.

Haha I havent tried other civs seriously simply because otto was the first I chose and it seemed easy and I was successful.  Ill spend the time to try the others out in the near future.  And remember I havnt been playing for long.  My first couple of games were comp stomps to get my xp up for cards but I still have under 2 mill.

    uh wanna play?

You don't need a whole lot of xp...I was a leiutenant by 1 million, and i only have 5 million myself now. Just use comp stomps to get a feel for the civ before playing.

Yeah I stomped to a little above 25 for silk road which I love.  Just played 2 of my cousins "teamed up" in a 3 man FFA.  Both of them are just corps but still Fighting 2 at a time isnt easy.  Anyway I used a silk road rush semi ff and executed it pretty well maybe a little slow but was able to force both of them to completely relocate by 10 min and from there it was only a matter of time.  Both of them are dutch so that works nicely.  Looks like just having the knowledge of what strat to use against who and when in each game is all I need and I think Ive found the right resources.  The question I still have is how can I view recorded games without war chiefs? Or are there pre war chiefs games out there I can take a look at?

If you still want a recording I can make one or two for you.

Sorry about all the flames, some of the people around here are idiots who suck but think they are awesome players who know what they are talking about. Contrarily, there are some good players here who do know what they are talking about.

I would consider myself a decent player. If you are looking for an ottoman rush and variants of ottoman rushes I can get you some recordings.

Some responses to what I skimmed:

Cookie cutter strats... Coming from the guy who constantly posts very specific BO's and strats, black rider, wouldn't you say you are being a slight bit hypocritical. Specific build orders help out in the beginning... he has only been playing for a couple of weeks and is above your level in vanilla. Something else going on??

Spahi ff is not the best ottoman strat. It is a good strat and one to be considered in certain situations.

Yes, a jan rush is predictable and can be easily countered. However, it can be a very effective strategy if you play it well. You can convince your opponent you are going with a different strat.  Variants of the jan rush can be very powerful, consider them.

Yes, try different civs. My favorites are otto and dutch.

A recording from pr 30+ will not help you as much as you think. At that level you really need to understand the reasoning behind every move made. Also, you will need to be able to recognize mistakes in game play and not adapt them into your own (this is true for all recordings). What you should be looking for are things like build order, effective micro, building placement, etc. The only differences between a PR 25 recording and a PR 30 recording (as far as you should be concerning yourself with) micro and building placement. For example, if you watch a PR 30 pull off a very effective ff and try to mimic it you may find that you have done it in the wrong situation and might have done better to follow a PR 20's jan/abus rush.

If you want me to make some recs for you just reply in here and I will do it.

He makes lots of good points almost everything is situational. When people ask for advice on strats for a civ the first thing I always say is vs who on what map. I'v played vs otto a ton and imo the best least predictable strat is a 1tp 10 janny spai ff(or falcs I guess) but I wouldn't do this vs russia or spain.

Also you can aim a little higher than pr 30 for recorded games, infact you should be looking at cutech to judge skill as pr is not only calculated by a bogus formula but it decays. Watch people 2100+ at least.

Uhm I pretty much post specific strats for the people that need them when they're starting out, like this guy. Sorry for the small flame, I need to get outa that habit....

If he is above me in vanilla, its because I haven't played vanilla in wat, 6 months. Also, I don't get the chance to play alot, I've only played around 60 TWC games.

    flickerdipper:

Alright so ive checked out a few strats and am able to get ff with 10 jans 4 abus 2 cannnons a little after 8 min but I am very short on wood with 1 unupgraded tp and not a whole lot of food.  Should i focus on wood for mosque, upgraded men and tps? or keep on food and gold for more jans, abus, connons?

Wood can be a problem for otto. I would trade cannons for 5 Spahi. The cannons are nice for siege and taking out infantry. However, the Spahi will work better for you. If they have hussars then not only are your abus in danger but also your falcons, if you go with 2 falcon shipment. Spahi will wtfpwn light infantry, artillery and villagers while jans will take out heavy infantry and cavalry as well as siege and abus will take out heavy infantry and light infantry.

As I said, wood can be a problem for otto esp. if you are ffing. If you are like me in the beginning you will rely heavily on wood shipments until you get enough villagers to disperse effectively among resources. So, when I ff my shipments go like this: 3 villagers, 700 gold, 3 hussars or 5 jans (if i have a tp and also depending on starting resources), 5 spahi and 1000 wood. That is my standard order for a ff. However, different circumstances call for different shipment orders. Naturally, from those first 5 shipments you can branch off and do any number of different things. Including, silk road, merc spam, jan spam, abus spam, schooner eco, industrial up, etc.

I found a recording of an otto mirror I played not too long ago that demonstrates some effective defensive micro, decent macro, adaptive play, and a powerful silk road eco. I made some mistakes but over all the play was good. If you want it let me know and I will either email it to you or send it to you over aim.
