You might find tutorials at thoose sites! At hyenastudios there is also a guy ( Monty Python is his name ) who's and expert in making custom maps...
Just short explaining:
There is no info about custom maps in the game.
If you want to make a custom map, you should go to: C/program files/microsoft games/Age of Empires3. Find the RM folder (If you use the War Chiefs expansion pack, it is RM2 but if you use the first version named just AoE3, it is the RM folder)
Over to the point: Open the RM/RM2 folder. You will see the files for the custom maps. There is two files for each of them. Copy for example the Texas files. <> <You could for example make a folder on your desctop called "Safe keeping AoE3". Make a new folder in there called "Custom maps" and paste the custom map files in there!!>>
After pasting the custom map files of Texas, make sure that the Read Only box in properties is unchecked. Just right click on booth of the custom map files you've copied/pasted and select properties. There must be no green mark in the read only box!!
After doing this, you must change the name of these two files to something else. For example "Sunny days <>. <> <
Before doing anything inside these files, you should follow a tutorial!
Info: The smallest of these files is no need to edit in before you know which immage that shall appear when you load your map in skirmish!
