i'd say Redcoats, Grenadiers [a seriously underestimated unit], and hussars. maybe a rocket or two for fun.
lol when i was a noob on vanilla i used to like 10 rockets, with 50 redcoats as a meatshield - used to tear down bases quickly, used to get owned quickly as well lol

French are one of the most versatile civs, having a wide array of units makeable is an excellent advantage, as they can adapt to most situations well. Oh, and Gendarmes are extremely useful when used well.

actully in any stuation, any amry can be countered, you always make counter units accordding to what your enemy makes. it's just a matter of experience and tactic.
well, TAD not included, My favioriate combo is from german, 10 warwagon + 30 skimisher + 5 horse cannons sometimes mix in some ulhan.
With TAD, it gose to japan, 10 hatamoto + 4 flaming arrows+40 ashigasru+5 motor and 10-15 naginata raiders if my emeny has massive skimishers.

hmm i have to admit those are good counter crieses armys.
People are more lazy and less willing to work now than people who lived more than 50 years ago.

sioux...late in game their legendary dog soldiers are deadly, having 56 attack and 1100 hitpoints...along with other very strong cav...i forget the name but they have 500 hp and 70 attack 0.o
