Walls are needed quite early in game before you have a mob in your town.
A lil off subject, but I remember back in AoK when people would wall off their entire trade route which usually went from one corner of the map to the other. This was because the further your market was from your allies the greater trade trickle you received. It was quite fun to kill your enemies trade carts.

u will also give up map control and in a deathmatch u cant afford to lose map control cuz u will lose every time
