    Short Description

This is a comprehensive spreadsheet covering all of the major aspects of the real time strategy game, Age of Empires III, the War Chiefs, and the Asian Dynasties expansion packs.  Anyone serious about learning this game needs this workbook.

    Description:

I have completed the Quick Reference Guide for TAD.  I posted this a few weeks ago for the clan I am in, N3O and made a few changes based on their comments.  Originally I made a huge list of changes I made from the TWC to TAD Guide but it is so long I doubt there are many in the ADD age that will read it all.  My advice is to look through every sheet as if it is new because I pretty much changed everything a little and some things a lot.

This Guide answers all of the common questions and a few you never thought to ask.  In general, I tried to group the worksheet tabs in categories and in alphabetical order.  I also started coloring coding the worksheet tabs for easier grouping.  I can find anything in the guide within a few seconds, just look for key words.  The following topics are covered:

    • AOE3 Quick Reference Guide (Cover sheet with useful links)

OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project.  Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.

For those of you who do not have Excel, do not want to download a free viewer, but still want to access the spreadsheet, I have converted it to an .html file on my website:

I would like to warn you that it does not look as good.  The interactive features (i.e. calculators) do not function in this version (due to the .html).   It was either have all the cells formatted and no interaction, or interaction with no formatting.  Since the majority of this spreadsheet requires reading but no inputs, I decided to keep the formatting.  It is sad Microsoft forces you into those choices but those are the only options I am aware of.

this is great i like the part about the unique church things.  how long did it take ?

I've been updating this Guide since AOE3's release.  I was disappointed in the Guide that came with the game and the ES online resources available for making strategies so I decided to make my own.  I used many peoples ideas and gave them credit in the sections where I spun off someone else’s work.  Just to update for TAD took me probably about 80 hours.  Since I work, have kids and a wife, I basically did not play any games for about a month.  So I sacrificed my game time for the community.

MNBob's (also a N3O member) online tables were used extensively for the card, building, and unit lists to save time reading the proto file.  Without his great initial work, it would have taken me much longer.  If I had to estimate the amount of time for the entire guide, I would say somewhere around 200 hours.  There is nothing out there like it and should set the bar for all strategy games.  I guarantee anyone would learn something and if they know Excel extensively, can learn a lot with all the interactive features.

Good news is, it will be very easy to update for future patches.

I am not surprised.  I was this [...] close to not posting here at all.  Out of all the websites I have posted this strategy guide on, Age Community provides the least enthusiasm.  I had over 200 downloads in the first two days mostly from Heaven Games and Age Sanctuary.

However, I am glad you enjoy it!

While you are at the N3O site, take a look around.  It is well updated, well organized clan and we are always looking for new friendly members in any skill range.

I was reading through my Guide today to find some information on a strategy I was working on and got to thinking, this thing is freaking big!  Sure there is a ton of information but takes a long time to scroll on the bottom to get to where you want.  In the interest of general gamer laziness I added a table of contents (with descriptions).  This table of contents is fully interactive and will take you to the guide of your choice at light speed.  You then can click the return right scroll button and go back to the table to navigate.  I don’t know why I never thought of this before and why no one has even suggested it.  It is very useful!

Also, notice that MNBob (a clan mate) placed a direct link to my Guide on his useful unit database (which pulls directly from proto with no errors and I used extensively during creation).  Links to his work are also located in my Guide on the front page links section.

The download and online links remain the same, just a different version number.  I deleted the old version so there is no confusion.  I also split my “Revolution & Units” worksheet into two separate worksheets, “Revolution Summary” and “Units – Revolution”.  This was just to keep things organized and all the unit worksheets together (makes more since with a table of contents), the content is the same.

So if you have not downloaded this free software yet, now is the time.  You have nothing to lose, I have a money back guarantee…

And while your at the N3O site, take a look around.  You may just find something else you like.

Nope. That's right. The unit class system has become all weird with the introduction of the Aztec. Now, because the Aztecs have no "Cavalry" as such, they instead get Coyote Runners to replace Melee cavalry and Eagle's to replace Ranged Cavalry. So, this naturally means that they can't be countered by Skirmishers / Archers / Cannons, so to do this they made Skirmishers and Archers Ranged Infantry (which counter Ranged and Heavy Infantry), and Coyotes and Eagles Light Infantry, which counter Ranged Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery respectively. This means that cannon no longer counter them also, meaning they do a true cavalry's job.

This also means that Heavy Infantry, which naturally counter Cavalry now receive a bonus vs. Light Infantry, so it's suicide to use Coyotes vs. Muskets, for example. But don't get confused and think that Muskets receive a bonus vs. Archers and Skirms in melee, only Coyotes and Eagles.

And now Light Cavalry = Ranged Cavalry, so if it says "Hussar: Light Cavarly", the aren't counter by Skirmishers and Archers. They are Heavy Cavalry. Just Dragoons and other Ranged Cav. are.

Wow I'm sounding like a broken record..Stick out tongue

Wow man, you even confused me.  I think he was looking for a yes / no answer.  Big Smile  All of the information in the guide has been tested in-game and proof read and commented on by many of my clan mates before submittal.  It's not perfect, there may be some errors in it, but once one is found, I am quick to get it fixed.  In addition, I used MNBob's tables for the classification tags.  His tables pull data directly from the proto file into an easy to read spreadsheet.  There may be bugs / typos, but no errors.

I tested this in TWC, and coyotes were treated as normal cav, eagles were treated as ranged cav, and arrow knights were treated as artillery. This is different in TAD now. I think that they should just change coyotes back to heavy cavalry, eagles to light cavalry, and arrow knights back to artillery. It would make it so much easier in game.
