With Japan it is possible to have a quick boom. With a few samurai to handle the cavalry, mass some Ashigaru to handle the rest, but maybe a few archers if you opponent is using skirmishers. Since Japan's units are all stronger than their European counterparts, if you have an army their size you will come out on top.
