The Rifle Rider is also a very good unit. With 13 damage (1.5 ROF) and bonusses against a lot of unit types (6.00x  6.00x  3.00x  3.00x  2.00x  0.50x  )

Try to make all units imperial and give them all upgrades and you'll see if 20 hatamoto destroy 40 skull knights with area 3 and wardance or 80 imperial jags or against 40 urumi.
you are avoiding the point we discussed earlier, you tried to pretend as if skull knight and jags can beat hatamoto at even number. as other has suggested, you were wrong but I was right.
anaswer to your question, even with 1x more area attack, 20 hatamoto still massacre 40 skull or 80 jaguar with 2 hands tied in their back. cuz it has .20 more melee resistance, double the Hp, and peak 127-147 attack power. how can skull knight and jags even scratch the hatamoto?
even a colony stats Hatamoto can kill a imperial stat skull without break a sweat.

So i should compare an unit who cost 4 pop space with a one who cost 1 or 2 pop spaces? About skull knightsas i already said they have an insane damage cap,3,5 times greater than base damage(while all other hi with area damage just 2 times),fu with wardance they do 63 base damage,send card for area damage 3 and they'll be able to spread circa 200 damage. Now 2 skull>1 hatamoto About jags,well after patch only a noob would send heavy infantry against them,with wardance they do 57 base damage and 171 against hi. 4 jags=684 against hi,even if area damage will kill or damage many of them before they start the fight, hatamoto will be owned . I tested this so i know what im talking about.

we are talking about "the best unit in the game", not cost efficiency or population space. .
and you are wrong again, 1 hatamoto still > 4 skull, in massive number 20 hatamoto kills 50 skull with little causalities (try that in editor and you will cry yourself a river)
you are like many others are misleading this topic to no where, of course most experienced players know how to counter a certain type unit, but that's not the topic.
plus you are joking, obivously you didn't test anything, 80 jags and 40 skill knights are cakes for 20 hatamoto. even handicape 40 skull combine 80 jags and 20 hatamoto still own them. so no, you didn't test anything or have any basic knoweldge about these units, and you don't know what you talking about.
jags do have 57 damage, but you seen forgot that hatamoto has 0.40 melee resistence, so poor jags can only do 112ish dmg once a time to hatamoto who has top 1200-1400 hp. in contest, hatamoto has peak 147 attack power + x2 area dmg, the first attack of hatamoto will send dozen jags to the grave, in massive number jags will die like insects.
I say it one more time, hatamoto is absolutely the surpeme unit in this game. be a cannon, a skirmisher, a musker, or whatever, there's nothing a hatamoto can't beat in even ratio. topic answered, pure and simple

You left out the urumi, which (barely) beat hatamotos. Red seal ship card is almost too good. A hatamoto can take a hit from and Imperial Cannon. That is just cheap; they need to be 400 EXP. Utilizing a good hit and run, however, will decimate hatamotos. Urumis still do a lot of dmg to hatamoto, doing ranged damage, which the hatamoto resists none of. Therefore (urumis still need to be easier to get, maybe such as able to train them late game) Gurakkhal Urumi (supposing you do right card order) will win cost and pop effectively. You could have 50 Sepoy or Gurkha backing them up as well. from the hand of, murdilator
