Petards do 2000 damage in imp age, and I don't know many people who aren't in the 5th age after 40 minutes.

3257 damage in Imp as Spain(with Unction, just need 5 petards to destroy a post imp fort).

Unction Mortar only deals 1426. If it's a land map I use Petards, otherwise I just use three monitors and unction for 7330 damage vs. buildings(733 damage x 10 vs. buildings) using the longshot ability.

Petards are fun little units that take up 1 pop and with civs that have fast infantry training and fast artillery training, train instantly.

I use them especially when there is a large battle near the enemy base; petards work better than mortars in some positions as they are hard to see when surrounded by a large amount of soldiers, and do devastating damage to walls Wink

It's treaty so you don't have to worry about how much they cost, just don't go overboard and make 50 to destroy 1 wall..

Well if threads came up that didn't support me mentioning it, I would stop talking about it.

Petards don't deal damage properly when the shift key is used or if they are delivered to anythng other than a TC.

petards are and can be used very effectively. for walls no. use mortars but for the civs that have fast train art time instant petards are usefull. i have gotten by someones fb before built a art.  i have spammed like 30 petards at once and i send 4 to each barracks/stables assuming some will get killed. when u make them and they have no army at there fb at the precise moment u can instant spamm petards and pretty much take out there whole fb in one blow and quickly. the hard part is seperating them all quickly and sending them all there diff ways.

but for walls yea use mortars.

Petards are definitely well worth it, and I use them all the time.

They're very useful for destroying forts or FBs. And, as long as you have some extra wood they're a good investment. The ability to take out a TC or a factory while the enemy isn't focusing on their base is more easily done with petards than any other unit. 1 successful petard raid a game is enough to make your oponent lose a lot of confidence, and is psychologically effective as well as strategically.

Yeah, use mortars which are 1. expensive 2 easy to kill and 3. give the player the time to react. I'd rather hit them where it hurts and exploit it like no tommorow. Also, if you right click on a building while selecting your artillary foundry, you can send petards there. Right click, click 3 times on petards, right click, repeat. Etc.
