Keep a look out for a FB or forward base, if there is one then i would expect an early rush. If they are doing a FF then most players would save the resources for Economical Upgrades. Depending on the CIV your enemy is using you can tell what there are going to do. Ottos and Russian players tend to rush, Brits can boom real well, Spainish FF, Dutch tend to turtle the most due to a harder economy to get off the ground. French are well rounded so it hard to tell what a french player is going to do.

Keep your explorer alive with relatively high HP as you near the colonial age. Have him walk around, or into, your opponent's base to see what resources he's gathering and to see if he's sending villagers forward to rush you. Knowing what resources he's gathering will allow you to make good inferences about what strat he's doing to do. =)

check your opponent's deck, it always help, i usually do this when aging to colonial

    dragonshinobi:

Dutch are quite more difficult than other civs, mostly because of their gold-based, they usually don't need the 700gold card for FF(that is what most people look for on other civs), for dutch, it could be used as 700 food for other civs

Scouting with any CIV is the same.

not always, sometimes you start with another scout, like an envoy, sometimes you need your explorer to do trading posts on early game(like ottos), maybe you got a unit good at scouting... and some other minor differences

with dutch and french, scouting is much easier, but if you keep your explorer right in front of his base and walk around it a bit and scout all of his hunts and visit them frequently, you should be able to see almost everything that is happening. If you keep your explorer so his LOS overlaps with the other guys tc LOS, but he can't see your explorer (it's hard to get it perfect) it REALLY helps, because your explorer is 'invisible,' but he can see what the other guy is doing.

Booming means investing heavily in your economy. Often this is combined with turtling, which means playing defensively, because it's usually not possible to really invest in your while playing aggressively.
