I recently downloaded the TAD patch and started playing, and theres one thing about india that I just don't get.

What counters sepoys?

I looked at their stats when i was playing against someone, and I realized that they were a powerful unit with bonuses to light infantry AND cavalry, like a mix between a skirmisher and a musket....

I had ~10 more crossbows (like 40 or something) than he had sepoys, and he won (I was even microing my xbows!)

I asked him what counters sepoys, and he said grenadiers, but i told him french cant train grenadiers (except from advanced church... not a good option if i'm stopping a rush) and he said meybe skirms?

Basically, what age 2 unit is superior to sepoys and actually counters them for french.

maybe skirms but seriously sepoys are OP even jans are weaker than them. 

sepoys arent OP, they are just cost effective musks, considering how much they cost, and also remember, that light infantry are coyote runners, eagle runner knights, disciples, and all the cavalry substitutes, thats why they got a bonus vs em. And such units as skirmishers, xbows, etc... are ranged infantry.

And I think that cross bows should counter em, but it depends at which age you are and how upgraded sepoys are, and of course the numer of your units and the number of opponents units...

Ok..Lets talk about Sepoy..........The word Sepoy simply means Soldier derived from the Hindi word for soldier ie "Sipayi".

Actually i did not knew sepoy is so go, as i have played AOE III very rarely...I love to use Gorkhas.

I agree with Ivan, the numbers matter. Sepoy cost 50% more than xbows, so it makes sense that if fighting in equal numbers they wouldn't be countered effectively. If you have 50% more xbows than he has sepoys and you micro properly (the units have the same speed but xbows greater range, so just hit and run, never stop moving them, you should be able to take a few out before you have to really engage him) you can definitely beat it. Just make sure you keep some pikes in the back also in case he brings in some sowars.

India has a expensive military. In a NR game as you said just use an Advanced Church. But in a regular Rush Game just raid them and they will suffer greatly. Simply don't allow them to get Sepoys, or at least have more upgrades to your units than they have for their Sepoys. Heavy Infantry and Hand Cavalry I expect would counter them.

The whole point is that you can match their sepoys with your crossbows, but there is no true counter for them in age 2.

Oh there a counter alright... *evil genius laugh* you hide your forces near his base, and when he attacks you *sounding very dramatic* YOU SUCKER HIS BASE AND PRAYS THAT HE ONLY HAAASSSSS SEPOYS!!

Xbow cost=80 

So you should be able to have 1.5 times his soldiers I'd say you'd be able to pull of his attack. 

He ages up at the same time as me (or a little earlier) and already has his fort up, so he gets his units faster than me + better map control so limited resources. He does a fast attack, which causes me to garrison some of my vills, and I wont have as many xbow as he has sepoy so early. He can just keep harassing me until I lose...

not to mention the camel things (can't remember name ATM) which are basically anti-crossbow.

hmmm too bad you aren't a Chinese player who can use village defense and boxer rebellion to your advantage. But did you ever try hiding your forces somewhere else on the map, I'm sure when someone in the prime of their offense they usually forget to watch their base till its too late.

The problem is Sepoys cost 50% more than a crossbow, so u would need 50% more crossbows to effectively counter it. Also, crossbows get a tiny bonus compared with skirms, so against a Sepoy rush my advice is to get Chu Ko Nus, Dutch Skirms, Gurkhas, Yumis or maybe bui
