ive done it alot and won, here are a few tips i learned. 1-getting a fort in age 3 can be helpful for getting you to age 4 safely. 2-chose a civ witch has a units in age 4 with age 4 stats they will get you by. eg spahi, polish winged hussar, skull knight .....ect these types of units do not require upgrades which can be rediculously too expensive (think about this for a second, 20 musketeers doesn't cost as much as upgradeding them to redcoats) 3-get a trading post or a few, advanced trade post is good for slowing them down when they try to take it. 4-i didn't do this since 1.01, but in 1.00 a good strategy was to get a few skirmishers, cause they help to pick off heavy infantry whic ur opponent will probably make if he see's a fort.
