Re: Graphics Compatibility Thread V3
Hendrïx ۩: ChaobSiroc:
OK... hear's the deal...
I just bought a Nvidia 8600 GTS 256MB factory overclocked graphics card. And I can play AOE 3 at FULL graphics everything maxed out and I have NOOOOOO LAG WHATSOEVER!
this card only cost me $125 on top of that... And did I mention that that is at a screen resolution of 1680x1050!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is NOOOOOO reason AT ALL to get a more xpensive card when the one that I have thouroughly ROCKS! SOOOOOO there... I feel better now! :)
im sure a 7600GT could do that aswell seeing as my ATI X1650XT could
but thats because aoe3 is quite old, if you want to play modern games at high-max settings your gunna require a far more powerful card
and why buy the 8600gts? its terrbile price/performance, the ATI 3850 is cheaper and more powerful
How is 8600gts a bad price? I bought it on NewEgg for only $115.... That is cheaper than your card from what I researched

Re: Graphics Compatibility Thread V3
A much-needed update to the front page has been applied.
Some worthy highlights are the movement of the rest of the extreme low-end cards to EOL or the new "Low end" class now. Also, note a lot more of the ultra-high end cards that have been appearing lately, are now added. Note I've added the X1300 and X1550 PCI cards as well, which should help PCI users get a bit more out of that bus over the 6200 and 5x00 series. The 8800GTS 320 & 640 are outdated, but still perform quite well, close to the 3850 256 and 9600gt respectively; however, the newer cards are more cost-effective anyways, and as such, the old GTS's will rest in EOL, replaced by the 8800GT and 880GTS 512. The 7900gs and 7950gt have effectively been replaced by more cost-effective cards as well, making them EOL. AGP users can note the existence of a 3850 512 version, which may be good if you're on something older than a 7800gs.
The integrated graphics and notebook graphics have been updated accordingly. Please help PCI-only users and do not recommend PCI-express cards, as this still creates a lot of confusion sometimes.
Cheers, EXPWN

Unfortunately you have a laptop, which means that for the most part, you're stuck with the graphics solution that came with it. Generally, you cannot upgrade your laptop's graphics, so either it will run AOE3 or it won't.
ChaobSiroc, just to point out, he has a laptop, not a desktop. Your suggestion would be great otherwise.

Yep I totally noticed that after I had made the post... I didn't even consider that he might be asking about a laptop since you can't upgrade your graphics in them practically...
I sent him a private message yesterday explaining my error.

Re: Graphics Compatibility Thread V3 Update
Hey all, I just thought I'd slip in a final update before my university exams.
Anyhow, most of it was cleaning up no longer available PCI-E and AGP cards in the upper categories. You may or may not find them, but cost-wise, there are better options than the ATI 2900 series, any ATI 1950s, and AGP versions of the latter with the 7900GS.
An interesting option, just so its out there, is the AGP 512MB HD3850, about the cost of a PCI-E 8800GT, which may be the last ever major release for the very very aging AGP bus.
PCI-E: Look out for the 8600GTS, which is a great replacement for the 1950Pro at its ~$100US price. The 9600GT is an attractive buy if you can get it around ~$150, as well as the 8800GT 512 at ~$200. The 256MB 3850 is quite a steal, which offers great 1950xtx performance in between the 8600GTS and 9600GT.
For value-oriented customers, the ATI 2600Pro is a suitable starter card, for about $75, and not too much more for the XT version, roughly an equivalent performance to the 8600GT, for both AGP and PCI-E.
