Rating is just some text that goes higher if you're lucky and get into good games and goes lower if you always have the crappy teammates or play with some really good person.

  I've beaten a person with level 21 (1st lieutant) and yet I'm still referred as a n00b because I'm unlucky and always been in the bad games.

Good way to look at it. You have fun and know how well you can play, and that's all that matters, not some random player telling you what he or she thinks.

Some people do honestly take the rating a bit to far and get very upset enough to take it out on their opponent who beat them.

I play for fun but if i'm on a losing streak I can get kind of pist off (I will never yell at my opponent no matter what civ etc i'll always say gg).  But otherwize I play more for fun but sometimes losing can be very annoying.

 Today I played a game where I lose my town and this guy has been calling my team all these names cause he was an *** .  So I lose my town yet I still do better then him and I was way better then him as his mate but it was 2v1 I almost held them both but couldn't I didn't have good town position so I couldn't keep gathering Res.  Very lame then he's like "what a bunch of effing noobs".  Just ignore players like that and laugh its what I do ^^.

Same here. I've played a treaty game where I've been told "don't play like a nub" for the entire treaty duration, then the moment the treaty fell, both of my teammates were quickly falling to ONE opponent, while I was spending a good long time fending off two. Fought way better than them and better than the two guys attacking me, but still I had to give in, of course.

Another sweeter game was when I finally played with a friend online. My friend had a new account and mine just has a bad record, so we were quickly accepted into some "noobs only" game run by two clan members looking for easy wins. They must've really been ticked when we totally overtook them pretty fast.

Still, yeah, I have trouble finding a game for the life of me. People have said I should create my own, play against noobs til my rank is better, or always play with friends; but FFS, I just wanna play. I don't wanna have to jump through hoops just to play.

Rating doesn't really matter for me either, just play for fun. But of course, and i think most people have this, if you are in a losing streak and go down like one or two levels, you aren't happy. But then i think again, i did have fun, so i keep playing.

If people call you a noob, just don't respond to them, and let them see you are better than them. Always funny if later appears that you are actually better than them. Because if you would be a noob, what would he be then?

 PS: level 21 is 2nd lt., not 1st
