I replied to your PM, but since you asked the question in this thread too, I'll go ahead and post here for everyone to see: If your rush straight-out fails, as in you don't kill many of his
guys and he totally decimates you, you've probably lost. But this
should only happen if you play poorly or if he badly outplays you. What
is more likely to happen, and what I think you're really asking about,
is what to do when your rush doesn't win you the game in the first ten
minutes or all-out aggression is no longer effective. In this case, I
like to try to expand my economy quickly. As I said in the VOD, this
can mean taking the trading posts and upgrading them, as even though
you won't always be able to effectively attack you're opponent you'll
still, if you've played intelligently, have a bigger army than him so
you'll be able to retain map control. Water booming with schooners is
also an effective strategy.
Another thing that I've been
finding more effective recently is to get up relatively quickly to the
third age. This does a couple of things: (1) allows you to train
cavalry archers instead of musketeers, which are pretty bad cavalry
counters, especially in big fights, (2) gives you access to awesome
units like oprichniks, which allow you to hurt your opponent's economy
without having an overwhelming force, and falconets -- which, when well
protected by a small mass of other units -- can be really effective
against bigger colonial age armies, and (3) you can boom from multiple town centers (sometimes using a fort to give you some space from an agressive opponent).

Re: The No Villager Russia Rush - by MrMilo
The thrill of the AOE-series is the evolution of strategies. All the way since AOE (1) strategies have changed and evolved.
I find Milo very instructive AND also I find his strat a bit amusing. Why? Because what he describes is the classic old school rush - the rush that was used the first 2 month after the release of AOE3 in late 2005. It worked in the beginning. What you had to do was also to add in a few batches of musketeers to do some siege damage on the TC.
However around xmas 2005 ES patched the game (it was necessary) and the TC hp was increased - and this Old School Russsian Rush was history. Often the opponents TC managed to hold with just a tiny fragment of one tenth of a hp. But it would hold.
Also the strat was forgotten because of the bad eco that followed. At that time russian players discovered that 17 vills was ideal before going age 2. Then you are in flow and the TC is active all the time.
The superior strat to Old School Russsian Rush (the walk through by Milo above) is one developped by some korean players. It might come from Blue_Gaiden after all - but I saw it first in use by koreans on ESO right after xmas 2005. And I admit it. I simply copied what they did. At that time I was the player in the world with most xp as russian - and knew right away that they were on to something.
To give you some hints: leave out the 2 cossackscards, and stuff age 1 and 2 with ressource crates, and fast infantrytrainingcards, and go age 2 w 17 villies, build 2 rax besides eachother and crank out streltsy. Stay on top with serious housebuilding. after a break-even-point compared to the Old School Strat - you will be swarming 70 streltsy and game is over cause u are on top and you keep gathering ressources, They train almost instantly and this strat is the whole point of Russia. Awakening the russian bear - flooding the enemy with vodkadrunken Streltsy each carriying a bottle of vodka and a sawed off shotgun. (Btw you train one batch of villies after u hit age 2). This rush is a little later than the old school, but you can keep massing and attacking. Oldschool - is an all out assault. Win or lose. This deck I refer to as First advance - because it was the first advance from the strat illustrated by Milo.
I find it interesting though - a forgotten strat can be revived - and earn its glory - as a new weapon!
Other russian strategies are Blue_Gaidens FF with delayed shipments, Blue_Gaidens fishingboatboom on Patagonia, The all out musketeer rush only, the Suvorov Strat, all out oprichniks, etc. etc. Russia is so versatile - finding new strats is allways interesting with them...
NB
Disclaimer - the streltsy are not drunk, and they don't carry vodka or shotguns... ;0)
