FOR ALL THAT USE PROGRAMS SUCH AS NORTON OR OTHER NON DEFAULT WINDOWS APPLICATIONS.
I do for norton:
You should have no problems here. Norton (my version at least) registers all my gaming files automatically as virus free because it is Norton and LAST I CHECKED CONNECTING TO ANOTHER COMPUTER DOES NOT PROVOKE A VIRUS. So therefore Norton lets it go through free.
If it DOESNT you have 2 choices.
1. Open up live chat (useful if you have broadband, which you kinda need to play this game) and ask a proper dude that went to uni and is a nerd...
2. Read on.
Open up norton internet security (click desktop shortcut will do)
Go to options
Personal Firewall
Go to program control.
This is why whoever owns Norton is Richer than Bill Gates.
NO COMPLEX CODING. SIMPLE "ALLOW/DISABLE" FUCTION FOR PROGRAMS!. Anything that can connect to the itnernet is listed here. DO not fear it it lags. Programs downloaded from the net also count for some reason.
Go to Age3/find age3. configure and "allow" all ports to go through. This means Norton will no longer monitor anything the Game 'Age of Empires III" does and will allow any and all programs/connections to pass through.
This is done simply through changing the setting from blocked/auto/custom to "allow". There we go. Solved.
So now I need to have a talk with MICROSOFT for making THEIR OWN FIREWALL compatable with THEIR OWN GAME. It seems symatec can make firewalls better than Microsoft. I think these guys need to redo their uni degrees.
Clever child - we hail you too. But if you have Vista you also have to do it the Vista way AS WELL.

After I did this, i quickly tried joining 3 games. 2 succeeded, but 1 failed, so i was going to send a friend a message. When I try, a bright red message comes up saying "failed to send message to '(friend)' reason 'user is offline'." But he was online, and i think he was trying to send me a message but it said "failed to send message to 'colbs (my eso name)' reason 'user is offline.' Anybody have any idea if this relates to fixing the failed to join, or is it just some unfortunate event?
Edit: Strangely, it's working now.
That is a common bug on ESO. I have it too off and on.
that bug is only on vista lol suckers
Nope You are wrong. I asked MIlo about it. it is a bug that occurs from time to time affecting both people so neither of them can see each other is on regardless of your OS.
I asked a mod about that.

Hooray, I'm sick of eXPired users who are too scared to use Vista. If you buy a pc with Vista as default it runs fine, its only shitty if you try install it on a original eXPired pc.

Re: Failed to Join VISTA FIX!!!
Hey guys, here is some complied info from "The Failed to Join Game... Fixed Summary" Thread.
diggo11:
For Microsoft Windows XP:
theterminator69:
Go to Control Panel-->
Network Connections
Right Click on the internet you are using (for example, Local Are Connection or Wireless Network Connection).
Click Properties
Go to the Advanced Tab
Click "Settings" on Windows Firewall
Go to the Advanced Tab on the pop-up once again
Click "Settings" on the connection you are using
Go to the "ICMP" Tab
Check Every single box/Allow everything
Click Ok, and Ok again.
You are done...hopefully no more problems...
For Microsoft Windows Vista:
Last_Legacy_Firehawk:
Here's how:
1: Control Panel
2: Administrative Tools
3: Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
4: Inbound Rules
5: Age of Empires III (doesn't matter which version) might be on there, if so proceed to step 13 If not, go to step 6
6: On the right hand side of the screen, click New Rule
7: Make sure the Program bubble is filled in (should already be, it's the default bubble) and click Next
8: Click 'This Program Path'. Default path is %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\age3.exe (or whatever version your using, I used Vanilla as an example. TWC is age3x, not sure what TAD is) and click next
9: Default option is 'Allow this connection' make sure its set to that and click next
10: Make sure all boxes are checked, click next
11: Name the rule (I named it as Age of Empires III)
12: Finish
13: Go to Outbound Rules on the left hand side (If Age of Empires III is already in this list, you're done)
14: Proceed to follow steps 6-12
15: You're done
Edit: Three hours of being on hold with Microsoft got me the answer to this.
If you use Norton Firewall/Anti-Virus:
hafesie:
Solved.
These are the only solutions so far... if you use other programs such as AVG Freeware you will just have to wait (also there is a possibility the Norton Solution may work for most other non-Microsoft products).
