Of the roughly 3000 people playing online, about 1400 is age3, 1400 is tad and 200 is warchiefs. XML queries indicate this. AOM/AOT total population was not vastly different, but the difference was in searching for games, there was not a breakdown by something other than skill/PR/ELO as well; AKA home city tier. Granted, when most people have HC25+ they have that part set to all home city tiers so that part of matchmaking is irrelevant.
ES has done a great job balancing, especially when you consider the number of civilizations. Companies are more competetive since age 2 series as there are more of them. Whether or not home cities are in or not is not going to drastically change the online population. I am just trying to say go with another idea or HC spinoff of some sort for age 4 (whenever that is) and put random civ option back in at least (nice for game browser when trying to counter each other before game has even started) Truly, the only other thing they missed is that maps themselves have things more randomly placed, but I do understand that increases chances of map screw.
I rather like things now with 3000 online, instead of 5000 (2000 smurfs) and I guess if I could spend 1000 hours modding tech tree, etc I could spend a few setting up the home cities. I will jeer and cheer with Age 4 as well. And they did get rid of autoqueue which was another huge bonus of age 3 (ottoman only one civ and it is pretty balanced)
I like this game or I would not play, mod or comment on it. Start the game already.
