Re: Spanish strat.
Incidentally, I have used Japan on Orinoco a couple of times. They
are very strong. Their motar is super OP in a battle like that. Once
you have 10 motars, it is a pain to kill them all (as opposed to say 5
of european motars, which you can kill using culverins and some patience). Plus you can
make motars very fast wherever you want, as long as you have control in
that region, instead of having to walk them from ur foundry. Plus they
have longer range. Not to mention the OP ashis, horse archers as anti-artillery, strong heavy hand cav, crazy fire arrows covered by super muskets. Japan has everything to win a Orinoco game. Welcome to the lamerhood.
InsanityQ:what map was this on, cause on some maps shogun and instant gerdame artn very strong e.g orinocco since you just block the crossing with anti cav and some cannons. or on G.plains since you get instant cav. anything like that. but spain isnt op its balanced. and anyways no civ is OP its just the strategies or things they do e.g instant gerdame which make them op.

Amorphous:
If you equate popularity/ease to use and OPness, then you might be right. I also think these are correlated. It takes some skills to use Spain, that is why it is not so popular among lower level players. But for higher level players Spain has certain advantages. Take skirms for example. Normal skirms have 32-33 attack, but under aura they have 54-55 I think. 90 skirms with 54 attack vs 120 skirms with 32 attack, we know who will win. Of course a game is far beyond these simple numbers. but for high level players, often it is the small advantages that make a difference.
I think eso has some civ rating (used in calculating our points) based on win/loss of each civ weighted by hc level and skill level. I would love to see where Spain stands. Anyone knows where to look?
Dwarph:
Spain is played less than 5% of the time in treaty. If they were op, they would be played more.
Japan - 30%
French - 31%
Russian - 15%
Hmm look at that. 76% of all games are played with op civs. How lame is that? Besides the native civs, Spain is played the least. This proves that Spain is balanced, or even up, but not op.
Spain up lol? Spain is op. Not as much as french, russain, japan, but still op.
I Will say:
French, russian, japan OP
Spain and china a littel OP. I Will perfer china for team games but spain for 1on1 games.
Not all people know spain yet. I have often been asking about Spain not sucks in treaty.
There is no diffrent on spain from twc and tad. Acutully spain was better on twc cause they have better rodelos. But how many did use them in twc? I can only remember 3 top players included me. People did first see how op they are then the boost on units come on tad :)

Re: Spanish strat.
Spain has a standard Euro economy and 90 pop with up to 163% attack.
Spain > China
Germany, France and Japan > Spain
Spain isn't OP since missionaries require constant protection from harm, they are easily killed by dragoons, war wagons and flaming arrows. They cannot be replaced easily since only one church can be built and team cheap priests is almost never sent by Russian allies.

If its team game china its the easy civs to play in this game. Just spam out choku. Cav spam of lancer gendarmes etc own it, but you have your teams mates to take care of that.

Spain are op! Thats facts.
And you cant easily kill missonary. They have lot of hitpoint and run away every time they are hit, and its the games fastest horse i guess.

Spain is not OP. If missionaries run away everytime they are attacked then the army would lose its Unction bonus especially against long-ranged weapons such as flaming arrows. In addition it would require constant micromanagement which would be impossible to maintain without letting settlers go idle etc.
