There are some German recordings here.

    http://forum.agecommunity.com/forums/post/865668.aspx

What most people I've seen do is to send the settler wagon production card and make three mills in age III, even before town centers, as each settler wagon that is produces equals two settlers at that stage. After the settler wagons are out then go to IV and get the card for their gathering. Go to IV, get the capitol upgrades, then produce the rest of your regular settlers.

Remember that when carded the 20 settler wagons, which are 40 population, actually gather the same as 54 regular settlers. Therefore, if you want a standard economy at the fight time you should delete your regular settlers down to 46. This will show you as having 66 villagers (20 SW plus 46 villagers). The population will be 40 (for the SW) plus 46 = 86, which gives you 14 more population for units.

Or, conversely, you can have 100 pop in units and only delete to 80 shown total settlers (40 pop in SW, which take 2 pop each + 60 regular villagers). This will give you 100 population for an army while giving you a 114 population equivalent economy.

I usually split the difference and delete to 75 shown villagers. Just remember to never delete your settler wagons.

Metis, your Guild Artisans calculation is wrong. The 35% are like a normal food upgrade card, not like an aura. You just have 230% instead of 195% food ignoring all other cards => your sw are like 47 vills on food, with all cards, you have 5.5 vills.

I'm not too sure about that mill first idea too... You can build as many sw as your eco allows you to, and building the tcs later means you wont have all vills until min 25.

Lets see, and you may be right as I'm a biologist and not a mathematician pe se.

Basic settlers gather at a base rate of 0.67 on a mill. Basic SW gather at 1.34, 2x the rate as they are the same as 2 settlers in one (one rides in the wagon, I guess). If gathering at the base rate 20 SW = 40 settlers. Now, add the 35% card for the SW and you get (20 * 2 * 0.67 * 0.35) + (20 * 2 * 0.67) = 9.38 + 26.8 = 36.18 food per second. 36.18/0.67 = 54 settler equivalent on base mills.

This is true as far as this goes but as you have said the rate lessens as you get more mill upgrades as the 0.35 applies only to the base rate and not the total rate. Another problem here is that the civs have different cards for, not to mention that German team food silos adds 10% to the team.

    I still think deleting to 75 shown settlers is a pretty good way to go (100 - ~47)  =  53 + 20 = 73

Also, you need to know that with SW, like with CdBs there is a gathering glitch. Put 5 SW to a mill and they actually gather at the calculated rate, whereas regular settlers on a mill actually gather at less than the calculated rate. If you want to see something interesting look at the idle villagers chart in the post-game stats -- it will amaze you just how many villagers are idle at any time due to moving about on mills and plantations.

These calculations are right, but they dont help. You will never have 20 sw working without upgrades, and that's why you need to put all upgrades into account if you want to find out the number of vills you save with this card. If you deleted all settler wagons first instead of vills only, you would have to keep ~5 vills more alive. There is obviously no point in doing that, but that's how you could show the effect of Guild Artisans in a useful way.

Question being asked of a sup port player in the german treaty section, but deal with it.

Wouldn't it make sense to delete your villagers and SW evenly in a TC:Mill ratio so in case you fell behind on resource you could rebuild your eco really quickly? You could delete a handful of villies (say 20 pop worth) make a strong push and then build them back in about a minute or two.

Yul is correct for that 47, assuming everything is fully upgraded. For those interested, here's  the calculation assuming all are on mills.

    Base rate

    • 0.67

    Upgrades

    • Seed Drill: 15% (+ .1005)
    • Artificial Fertilizer: +30% (+ .201)
    • Large Scale Agriculture: +50% (+ .335)

    Cards

    • Economic Theory: +10% (+ .067)
    • Team Food Silos: +10% (+ .067)
    • Sustainable Agriculture: +15% (+ .1005)
    • Refrigeration: +20% (+ .134)

    total = 1.675

    SW specific

    • Guild Artisans: +35% (+ .2345)

    Therefore, one SW gathers at the combined rate of: (1.675 + 0.2345) * 2 = 3.819

    • One settler gathers at the combined rate of: 1.675
    • Each SW gathers at the rate of 3.819/1.675 = 2.28 settlers on fully-upgraded mills.

    Therefore, 20 SW are equivalent to  2.28 * 20 = 45.6 (~47) settlers on fully-upgraded mills.

Note, however, that you will not have all of your economy cards in when the SW are produced. Therefore, each SW will gather at a higher relative rate than the equivalent of two settlers if you get them all out and send their card first. Also, even when not carded, each SW that comes out is like 2 settlers so 3 mills is like having 6 more TCs for a short time -- it's best to get at least three mills built and produce SW's before you build more TC's.

Note that he calculation for plantations may be and wood-chopping will be different. In fact, as wood-chopping has fewer upgrades each carded SW is equivalent to even more standard settlers in terms of wood gathering power.

Assuming at the fight you have everything upgraded and want a standard economy you should keep 99 - 47 = 52 regular settlers so you should delete to 52 + 20 = 72 shown population of settlers.

Watch the VODs as they are interesting. Also, here is a boom I just did where, as I said, I got three mills up and the SW out before building any TCs. I'm sure that the boom could be cleaner but you get the idea. All upgrades are taken and AA is out but not upgraded (I had to wait to get the card). I've deleted to 99 total settlers and probably need to delete more but this is a native boom so the wood is important. Delete 20 regular settlers and three of the mills, replacing them with plantations.
