Hey guys, I play AOE 3 for some time, but I have never seen a use for this expensive and high pop saloon troops. They seen very underpowered to me. Does this units have any use at all?

Always check the Saloon, for the OP Lil Bombard! If you get the OP Lil Bombard, just make all bombards and 15 dragoons, and nothing can get through them! They are so OP they can take several culv hits. Also note that with Spain they are even more OP, that's right! MORE OP!

In rush games, the expert comps use saloon units a lot. In Age III and IV they can be pretty powerful. I've even used them in treaty games.

I won a 1v1 once as Otts versus a French by using Dance Hall Ronin. His first several attacks were Gendarme spams, which were completely decimated by the Ronin. After that he never sent a single hand cavalry unit my way but only made skirm and muskets, which I killed with Hussars and Abus.

There are really good counters to mercs though -- Ninjas and Spies. 

I was once facing a Hatamoto spammer as Ports. I had seen him pick an export deck early on so I knew he was going to do this. I was quite happy to see Ninja at the saloon. It's funny when you send a bunch of Ninja against Hatamoto when the Japan player doesn't know that they have the merc tag and that Ninja have a 10x bonus against mercenaries. Spies, also are good versus mercs with their 20x bonus, especially good are spies with the Agent or Assassin upgrade. 

If you want to become familiar with what the Saloon units can do then play one of the Colosseum games that use them extensively.

The other day, playing Spain, I made a lot of renegados more or less as a joke but they actually did pretty good.

• 97 ranged attack @ 18 range with a 2x multiplier vs heavy infantry and ranged cavalry
• resist 30% of ranged attacks.
• 58 siege and 29 hand attack.

They would be a darn good unit if they weren't 4 population.

Metis, do you mean 97 range attack after you factor in the multipliers or did you somehow upgrade them? I thought they had like 40 attack.

They do have 40 base attack. However, note that I was playing as Spain. I ran a test to make sure though. In Imperial age and with the arsenal upgrades and unction, Renegados have 97 attack. 

I just played a game with blind monks from the saloon, not eco/pop efficient but good fun.

the few times ive played china i usually check the monastery to see if their is a good anti cav unit since their anti cav is a joke lol

They are like strelet versions of cav archer lol.
