Subject: TAD trail crashes in Single Player Skirmish and graphic options

I downloaded the Age of Empire III - The Asian Dynasties Trial edition and played

the single Player->Champaign with no problem.  However I played it a 2nd time and it

did crash with and error report dialog.

I tried to play the Single Player->Skirmish and it works for a little while and then

crashes when I start to move around and explore near the water.

I noticed it would crash when I selected the dock waggon and move to the water to build a dock so in future trys I don't click on the dock waggon and the game seems to play longer.

I tried to turn off some of the Help & Tool Options->Graphics options.  When I did this

the game would crash right away and I couldn't even play the Campaign level.

To fix this I would have to uninstall the game and then reinstall it.  Then I could play the Campaign level.

I was hoping turning off some of the graphics options would make the Skirmish level work

longer.  Turning off some of the graphics options just made the game crash faster.

This is the graphics options I changed:

    Bit Depth: 16

These are the graphics options I turned off:

       Water reflection

       Bloom effect

       High-poly models

       Terrain detail objects

       Tracer effects

       Foot prints

    Other settings I did:

       Terrain texture quality: low

       Model texture quality: low

       Texture filter quality: low

My graphic setting is set to 16 bit, 1024x768

    I have:

       Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

       MSI Nvidia NX6600GT-TD128   graphics card,

          Driver 75.19_geforce_winxp_32bit_english_whql.exe 9JUL2008

       Intel Desktop Board D945GTP
          2.8 GHz

          1 Gig RAM

          BIOS Driver: NT94510J.86A.4092.EB.EXE 9/3/2007

Intel SigmaTel Audio driver: AUD_allXP_5682_PV_IDT_v006_IAS.exe 11/4/2007

The above drivers were the latest drivers as of 07/15/2008

This is what the error dialog says:

Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties Trial has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    Error signature

       AppName: age3y.exe    AppVer: 0.1.2.6    ModName: ntdll.dll

       ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180   Offset: 00001230

       C:\...\LOCALS~1\Temp\6da3_appcompat.txt

Other previous 3 error files I saved are:

       b4a9_appcompat.txt

       7821_appcompat.txt

       aa9b_appcompat.txt

       6da3_appcompat.txt

I renamed these files with a .xml extentions and can view them in a internet explorer.

It doesn't help me any but maybe it would help someone else.

I click send error in the dialog and I hope someone is getting all these reports and can fix the

    problems.

    -------------

    07/23/2008 15:50 EST

I played around with the graphics options some more and

    didn't change the following fields:

Bit Depth, I left at 32

Terrain Texture Quality, I left at High

Model  Texture Quality, I left at High

Texture Filter    Quality, I left at High

I was able to play for a little longer time.  It crashed after I selected the Dock waggon and

built a Dock.  Before I wasn't able to build a dock before it crashed.

    Maybe I need more memory?

My mother board has 1Gig of Physical Memory,

    there is 580000 K available.

    I saw this number when

I do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to view the Windows Task Manager (WTM). The RAM availble is on the TAB performance section of the WTM.

My graphic card has 128 MB DDR3 memory.

I also ran defrage and deleted files in

    start->run temp

    start->run %TEMP%

a computer like your shouldn't have problems while running AOE, but here are some things you can try:

-update the graphics driver(for you card, go to nvidia.com)

    -uninstall the demo

-check if your computer's video cable is connected to the video card, not to the motherboard

-reinstall DirectX 9.0c(i think it comes on the game's CD)

-make a HD clean up(i use CCleaner for it, but windows comes with a built in one)

-defrag the HD(i use AusLogics DiskDefrag for it, but, again, windows has a built in one)

Subject: Re: TAD trail crashes in Single Player Skirmish and graphic options

These are the graphics options I turned back on:

       Water reflection

       Bloom effect

       High-poly models

       Terrain detail objects

       Tracer effects

       Foot prints

Other settings I turned back on:

When I turn these settings to Low it caused the game to crash before any screen even loaded.

And I would have to uninstall and reinstall the game to get the game to do anything.

       Terrain texture quality: High

       Model texture quality: High

       Texture filter quality: High

I turned off or set to low the following and

now I can play the game without it crashing:

    Anti-alias Quality: Off

    Shader Quality: Low

    Shadow Quality: Off

    Particle Quality: Low

    :)

    7/25/2008 ------------------------------------------------------

I played the skirmish level again.

This time I just set the

    Shader Quality: Low

and left the following settings alone:

    Shadow Quality: On

    Particle Quality: High

    The game didn't crash.

    7/31/2008 ------------------------------------------------------

I bought AOE III Gold edition today and when I installed it I notice that it was doing

some DirectX updates.  I tried playing the AOE Asian Dynasty demo and now I

am able to set the Shader Quality to Very High, and I set Shadow Quality to Very High.

I was able to play the Skirmish level all the way through without a crash.

I ran DxDiag and saved the report.

I compaired a previous DxDiag with one from 7/24/2008 and noticed that

a lot of the files had

    version 5.03.2600.5512

    instead of the previous

    version 5.03.2600.2180

On 7/24/2008 I tried to install the

    DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2008) from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=822640ab-0983-4c41-9c70-632f6f42c557.

I was trying to fix a problem with EA Spore Creature Creator demo and EA said I had

the Debug version of DirectX.  I did because I was using the SDK and doing DirectX development on my pc.

When I installed the June 2008 from the Microsoft download URL above it must not have

change directX from ...2180 to ...5512.  Also, maybe when I installed the June 2008 version

it didn't do everything like when AOE III Gold did.  When I did the June 2008 version

I had WinXP SP2.  On 7/30/2008 I updated my windows software to SP3 and did all the other

updates.  When the AOE III Gold was installed it was with SP3 of WinXP and maybe this

made the version ...5512.  In the DxDiag file I notice that the Direct3D was still set to

Debug instead of retail.   I don't think the June 2008 correctly updated my DirectX like the

one on the AOEIII ver. 1.12 from the AOEIIIGold did.

    just a note:

with the shader quality off or on low, bloom and water reflection, have no effects
