liiiike historically, culturally and politcally.
Kinda like how...kent is southern in the Uk in all ways and york is northern.

let's just say screw it, since there are some states which do not want to be referred to one or the other...... cuz some fools still have civilwarphobia in their blood. geographically, for example, MD is a southern state, but nobody in MD (me included) calls it a southern state. It's a "border state", and MD is more well known for it's crabs and crappy baseball team (and it's near win against New England Patriots last year) than as a "_____" state. ok maybe it's not THATwell known for it's near win against NEP last year, but still.........

Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, and Louisiana. It is basically all the states of the Confederacy. Some people include Missouri and West Virginia but I dont.

How the hell is California northern? It is the most directly western state in the country! Unless you are talking about California being apart of the union during the civil war.
