The french have heaps of advantages, but the main one is coureurs, most european civs get 3 settler cards, but french have 3 coureurs card, coureurs are tougher, stronger, faster, gather more - and because they gather faster than the normal settlers, sendind the economic cards like "economic theory" benefit them more, so effectively;
