i switched my screen resolution from the default setting to a higher setting to see if it would work, it didn't. normally when this happens games revert back to the default setting that worked. thats not whats happening for this game. i am stuck with a blank screen and i'm unable to change my video settings back to the default screen resolution. i tried to reinstall the game and its still stuck in the unsupported screen resolution. what do i have to do to restore my game back to its default screen resolution? please help!

Haha! Sorry I did this once too :D. You totally have to wipe the game and all it's settings off it. This is what you do. Go to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 download the install clean up thing. Then uninstall AOE3 regularly. After you are finished load up the install clean up, and click on AOE and click remove. Reinstall the game and it will work in proper resolution.

 I, foolishly, did the same thing as well, and did this and it worked.

there are lots of threads about this problem.

I just used to search and found it, so I'm quoting myself from other thread:

Marlonsm:

open Windows explorer ( [windows key] + E )

go to:

My docs/My Games/Age of Empires/

If you are on normal AOE, open users/newprofile.xml (using notepad)

If you are on TWC, open users2/newprofile2.xml (using notepad)

If you are on TAD, open users3/newprofile3.xml (using notepad)

 

the file will look like a mess, just press crtl+f and search for "optiongrfxres"

near it (to the right), you'll find the resolution the game is using, just change it to your monitor's resolution, if you don't know it, just write 1024x768, that all monitors can handle, and is enough for the game

save the file and open the game.
