30 ashigarus vs 5 falconets, who wins?
I would expect falconets but they were destroyed and 5-6 ashigarus which were left destroyed wondered around my TC after that. And all this while ashigarues were in ranged attack mode and falconet has -75% range resistance.
This was in industrial age so I assume with ashigaru's were with all upgrades, my falconets had industrial upgrade as well and yet they were destroyed by units they were designed to counter.
So I put "no japan" on all games I host from now on untill I figure out how to counter ashigaru spam.

If you are both in industrial age you deserve to lose vs Japan. They are a late game booming civ that few can match once they have full ups for their ashi. Only way to pull out a win V Japan is with a good hard rush. Ashi got nerfed in the latest patch and their boom while still good is slower now. Take the initiative and rush them hard. You should be able to pull out a win 50% of the time. good luck

1. Your data are not accurate. 5 falconets would win against 30 (equally upgraded) ashigarus (in ranged mode) unless you set the cannons to attack mode too late.
2. It seems your enemy was a inexperienced to not attack the cannons in melee mode.
3. Artillery is not supposed to fight heavy infantry without a meatshield because of the danger of melee mode charge.

If your talking about tactics I doubt this guy cared about his Ashi's. He probably left them there and went back to his city to watch his town center flag flail in the wind. Or make a buttload of villies. In the time that battle went on he probably out eco-ed you if he hadnt already.

nope, even in ranged, as long as the ashi user isn't too stupid to put them in stagger mode. then again even if he doesnt put them in stagger, they still might win.

I had around 10 Ruyeters to protect them which destroyed Nagitas and were killed by Nagitas and ashigarus so in then end only falconets and ashigarus were left.

Re: 30 ashigarus vs 5 falconets, who wins?
In the scenario editor, I found that the results can go both ways. If the Ashigaru are just left to stand there and fire on their own in standard ranged mode, then the falconets will beat them. However, if the Ashis are microed at all they will beat the falconets. If you run little groups of 5 at each falconet in melee mode it's no contest -- the Ashis win hands down. If you stay in ranged mode and concentrate your fire on a single cannon at a time you will still win, but you will lose many more Ashis.

why the hell shouldn't you use stagger mode? Isn't this exactly what this was made for?

Stagger mode supposedly spreads your units out so that the splash from cannon fire won't kill as many per shot. "Stagger" is one of the hardest things to teach soldiers in the real army as humans have a tendency to bunch up, especially in dangerous situations.

True, this might have helped in hand to hand combat but when cannons, granades, RPGs, mines(or any other major explosives came around) spreading out units is the only way to keep the majority of them safe.
In hand combat you can protect each other from all sides and a bunch of units could hold off 10 times more because all the units cannot attack at the same time. Arrows would rarely be used at this time because the risk you might kill more of your own units then your enemy.

It seems it is even hard to teach programmers to program "stagger" effectively. The stager formation works properly only at small numbers: at large numbers (like 50 musketeers) it only flattens the rectangular formation without increasing it's area.
