FFA is fun too. Seriously though, if you can play Great Plains game after game after game and don't crave some variation, then ugh, just one big ugh.

Re: Why the heck does everyone love Great Plains so much?
Most people play Great Plains for the faster cavalry training (players can be very impatient when it comes to gameplay) and "balanced" map layout which tends to favor cavalry-oriented and food heavy civs like the French and Russians. I am personally sick of Great Plains to the point where I refuse to play it unless it is a FFA or comp stomp. The same goes for Deccan on TAD.

Re: Why the heck does everyone love Great Plains so much?
I live on the Great Plains map.
We have played many civilizations on this map. We begin playing the TWC civs here and then started playing as the Europeans. For a while, the Spanish civ looked like it was winning and then the French but we revolted our British and took over most of the map, except for the southern part, which we had to fight the revolted Spanish civ for. After this, we played most of the civs here (except maybe the Ottomans) but the game was limited to booming and fighting the Natives. Recently, the Chinese, Japanese and Indians have been played on this map and have contributed to the team's economy.
The bison are pretty much gone and everyone is on mills or is cowing now, though a few players are still hunting the deer. A couple of players are on plantations (cotton farms) but most collect food then trade for gold. One player has his factories on gold (Wichita's aircraft industry) but most of the factories are on food (packing plants). Even though the trees are mostly gone, no factories here are on wood; we must buy wood at the market.
BTW, we have finally learned how to eat the fish and ducks that inhabit our ponds -- yay!
The grizzly bears were killed long ago but you can still find coyotes around old wagons and vultures in dead trees. There are not many outlaws left but you do come across one of them now and again. Unfortunately, our hero (Jedediah Smith) was killed by the other team's Comanche in 1831 and now lies in an unknown spot waiting in vain for someone to come along and revive him.
We could once build at the Comanche trade-post site but it has had a bug since 1901 and can't be used anymore. The Cheyenne post still works but we have a treaty going on here and it's too far for us to reach from this TC (we are at the south of the map and it is at the north).
We are right on the trade route (which is upgraded to railroad) so we can't wall but we are not concerned as a good many of our units are infantry, artillery or (mechanized) cavalry who have been upgraded to veteran status. Some of us are no longer active military units but even as town militia we still can pack a punch.
