I've installed the game on both computers and patched them both the exact same way for both computers, make a ad hok network and make a game, type in the ip to join and get the a message saying "version mismatch" can that be because of using same cd key on both

Though you're technichly not supposed to play LAN together on computers all using the same CD Key, it won't cause a version mismatch. The only possibility is that they're not patched alike -- you'll have to do a full reinstall on both versions, and make sure after you've uninstalled that you delete the Age of Empires III directory before installing again -- it could have some extra files in it that are messing up your game. That directory could be in one of a few places, based on how you got the game:

Retail or GFWL: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\

Steam: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\bin\Age of Empires III\

Impulse: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Game Studios\Age of Empires 3 - Complete Collection\

Change "Program Files" to "Program Files (x86)" if you're running a 64-bit OS.

i've gone as far as deleting everything to do with aoe 3 in the registry, running windows 7.

still same message appears again and again.

Hey jezza,

Do you have a router in your household? I used to play lan games and they worked by having all computers hooked up to the router. They didn't work if I connected the computers together, I think the computer would have a diffferent address than the ip if you connected them like that.

Also check in the router if you do have it if the computers are allowed to connect with each other. make sure that isn't blocked.

I hooked em both up to the router, the home group network is working so the computers are communicating in that regard.
