You can always use an existing colloseum map to figure out how it works. (Of course don't take anybody else's work as your own though) but just use it to examine the triggers that they use. Sometimes people are nice and add very good descriptions to the triggers so you can figure out what they do and what they're for. Just open up an existing colloseum map in the editor and have a look and see what you can find.
You'd be surprised what you can learn by just looking at what other people have done in the past with map making. It's how I learned about some of the basics a long while back.
