Russians and germans both have a good chance against japan. But actually the best civs against them are the natives, because they can do some of the quickest and most powerful rushes in the game and among experienced players that is japan's well known weaknesses, their early colonial. Coyote ARE NOT infantry,they dont get countered by cavalry with a bonus against infantry like lancers,naginata etc.

for rushing with the french I actually like to do double rax xbow+musket. Musks are better rounded than pikes and do fine against cavarly, they're a bit more expensive but I find that with that combo you don't need such a huge amount of wood, just a few villies on gold does it. The Shogun is an awesome unit, and it is OP. But most civs will have OP age 4 shipments, you don't often get to industrial in SUP games, and shipments there should be OP.
