but what if they counter rush? is there something i can do ahead of time, or during a rush to keep from being wiped out?

to get us back on track: how about bring back conversion with monks? i loved that, even if it was op.....), and what if you could research any time period? (sweet, i love chariots from aoe1)

i love: carolina and great plains (though plains can sometimes run short of wood).
i like: ozarks and great lakes (though lakes really call for a diffrent strat, so i like the frozen one even if it has less wood....)
i hate: andes (overdone x100) and plymoth (just pointless)

thats not advice, thats criticizem. it also starts flame wars. please try and help the person. if you have a better strat with useful tips and info, share it and i will gladly take the sdvise. but if you arnt going to help, why post?

get vills as fast as is possible, you need them. once you age, build a outpost as close to them as possible and have it recieve shipments. send more outposts from city to save wood, build 2 of barracks, stables, and artillery buildings. ...

srry this is a bit of a noob strat, but it works. aztecs are slow starters. only play in treaty games (40 is best) and get all vill cards. They have a slow eco at first so u need to focus on food an wood (note all their cards for gold are infinant, so it wont be hard to get that) and use your fire pit to get exp, then ...
