favorite is viking in vanilla, Korea in conquerors. (on water maps)
otherwise my favorite is turks for late game jannisary spam. (relatively cheap for damage dealt)
or Spain in conquerors for conquistadors + accompanying missionaries

i have long debated whether i should build trebuchets or bombards in aoe 2

no it has to be a pet, animal treasure guards can hand attack buildings (just imagine how surprised i was when i found out)
I'll say the explorer's dog because it is most common.

any ideas/issues? i have some.
1. the ironclads are too weak for card only, and should be dock trainable after a revolt.
2. the Portuguese organ gun wastes it's many shots on one or two units. extreme micromanagement helps, but it is still an issue; the gatling gun doesn't have this problem. perhaps the damage area could be increased to that of ...

i just needed a way to counter them. bonus vs infantry eliminates pikes, musks, & spies. reg cavalry are not effective and dragoons unavailable. (RE should patch to give that unit a penalty vs cavalry)
